BJÖRN HERREGER

Björn Heregger skiing in Canada
Waiting in hope

Sun, mountains and Canadian powder – that’s what the mind’s eye conjures up the moment you hear the words “skiing in Canada” but, alas, things don’t always work out like that. Snow, wind and avalanche-endangered snow fields are what Björn Heregger is facing right now in the land of the Indian summer.

Björn, a member of the SALEWA alpineXtrem Team, arrived in the Rocky Mountains a few days ago. Expectations were high, as he and his team moved into their log cabin in Atlin. The only snag was the less-than-ideal weather. A strong wind and uneven snow coverage continue to make things difficult and assessing avalanche conditions is proving a headache for the local guides.

The Austrians, at any rate, are making themselves at home. The Canadian food and coffee are making up for the disappointment. As well as that, time is on their side – they are not flying home for another couple of weeks.
